In Ireland there are two types of rugby fans. There are the genteel, marbles in the mouth, gin/whiskey/heineken drinking upper middle classes and the there are the Liverpool FC/Newcastle FC style nutters from Limerick. These people live rugby like an addiction.
My mother is from Limerick and although she has not lived there for over 40 years she still shouts at the television whenever Ireland or Munster play rugby.
I was at mass last week for my father’s anniversary and as we left the church Donncha O’Callaghan was leaving with his wife and new baby. Everybody lets him be. Except my mother, who is shouting at him across the car park while we hurry to the car.
Happy Birthday Mum. 75 today.
And going to see Ireland -v- The All Blacks in just over 2 weeks.
Aren’t I the great son?
